In a Vase, on Monday – Spinach and Stock

Earlier this year a friend brought me a gift of a glass filled with Ranunculus she had grown. I returned the glass on the weekend, filled with a few of the flowers she had admired in my garden.

Verbena bonariensis,; Stock (Matthiola incana) ‘Vintage Brown;’ Calendula ‘Festive Mix,’ Straw Flower (Bracteantha bracteata) ‘Silvery Rose,’ seed heads from Nigella ‘Midnight,’ and a few short, bolted spinach stalks. I’ve discovered the Straw Flowers close at night and don’t start to open until the day is bright or sunny – the flowers for this vase were collected quite early in the morning.

  2. I’ve never seen spinach in a bouquet, but it really works. I finally looked up stock, and discovered another veggie connection: that it’s a member of the Brassicaceae, which includes cabbages.

    1. I found that out earlier this year when I saw cabbage butterflies fluttering about them!! Thank goodness their fragrance is more like cloves than cabbage!

  5. And you have helichrysum and calendula too! What a nice idea to return the favour of the vase you received too – giving and receiving flowers picked from a garden is such a welcome joy

      1. I like them in single colours too, and have seen a red one on one of seed website so that will be added to my orange, white and pink ones…could do with a yellow too..
