My poor drought-stricken friend had hardly a Nigella this year. I’m going to be sure she knows about this one, as she’s a blue-lover, and she might want to try it for next year.
Yes – I’m amazed and also quizzical. The spot where these photos were taken has had Nigella growing for several years now, all self seeded (after the initial planting), with no watering by me. It’s a very dry area that gets full sun, not much else is very happy there.
Another patch, not too far away, had TONS of Nigella last year, growing from seed I had scattered the autumn before. This year, though, there’s only two or three plants. This spot gets a bit of shade in the afternoon, is a bit lower down (so not quite as dry, I think, with better soil) and many things grow well in the vicinity.
I’ve been tempted to try other Nigella colours but I think this deep blue would be hard to match or beat!
What a stunning colour!

Beautiful photos! I think the dark blue Nigella really are the prettiest. ๐
